Boracay had been a backpacker’s popular paradise since God knows when. Luxury travelers and honeymooners go to the island of Boracay because the beach is no doubt, stunning. Aside from the sparkling white sand beach, there also are a lot of activities to choose from, hence, the reason why Boracay has always been hailed on the top list of best islands in the world by every publication. Before you go to this alluring island, make sure to read the dos and donts and make yourself informed about the current events in Boracay.
If you’re looking for a place to stay where comfort, luxury, a place to find friends, and not that too expensive, Mad Monkey Hostel Boracay is what we recommend.
Mad Monkey Hostel Boracay
Mad Monkey Hostel is a chain of hostel that provides great competitive prices for backpackers with a touch of luxury and comfort. They currently have eight (8) hostels in Southeast Asia including Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines and they are still expanding. Not only that, Mad Monkey Hostel is known for its name because of the party vibe and undeniable friendship you can get from fellow travelers booked from all over the world. This hostel chain also helps the communities they are located in.
Mad Monkey Hostel Boracay is situated just 2 minutes away from Bulabog Beach and around 5 to 10 minutes walk to the main beach and or D-Mall in Station 2. Location is convenient enough to explore both Bulabog Beach and main beach Stations 1 and 2. We had no problems navigating from one place to another from the hostel.
Getting there from Caticlan Airport
Flying from Manila and arriving at Caticlan airport by night is not unusual. However, upon exiting the arrivals area, there will be locals that will ask you to avail their transport directly to your hotel. It may be convenient but this offer is more expensive than you can think of. So here what you need to know.
1. Exiting from the arrivals area of Caticlan Airport, turn to the right side of the road or ask a local where to find the tricycle heading to Caticlan Port. This ride will only cost you 50 pesos, max of four people per tricycle.
2. Once you have arrived at the Caticlan Port, you will be required to pay a Terminal Fee of 100 pesos, Environmental Fee of 75 pesos, and Boat fee of 30 pesos before you could enter the port. Make sure to keep the receipts and fill out the small information sheet before you head to the boat. From Caticlan Port to Boracay by boat is only 10 mins.
NOTE: Children below 5 years old are free of charge for the additional fees.
3. From Cagban Jetty Port (Boracay) to Mad Monkey Hostel, hire a tricycle. This will cost you around 100 to 150 per one way ride. Most drivers know the location of any hotels. This is a 10-15 minutes ride depending on the traffic.
Looking at this commute route to Boracay Island and to Mad Monkey Hostel, this is way cheaper and faster as you won’t have to wait for the van from Caticlan airport to fill up.
Arriving at Mad Monkey Hostel Boracay
Upon arrival, we were greeted by their receptionist with a big smile. She immediately asked for our name and reservation, asked for each of our identification cards (IDs) and handed us over the room keys. Please do note that they will be keeping your IDs and will require you to pay 200 pesos for the key deposit, which isn’t bad at all.
We have arrived in the evening and the party has been going on for a while. Don’t be shocked! This is a party hostel. 🙂 Of course, we’re seeing people having fun at the bar, drinking, chatting, dancing like crazies, beer-ponging, swimming at the pool and shouting, but that’s what this hostel is about, having fun while taking your vacation!
At first, you will really maybe a bit shocked because of the loud music and guests having a good time, this is going on almost every night so if you will be staying for quite long, you will eventually get used to it and in no time, you will be a part of the partying crowd. The party starts as early as 2 pm (or later) and the music is being cut by 12 midnight.
Room Talk: Superior Double Room (Private)
The room that was booked for us was the Superior Double Room, a private room located on the ground floor of the hostel building. This room is one of the rooms with easy access to amenities like the bar, lounge, and the swimming pool.
The room has a glass door and the front walls are made of glass but worry not, as there will be a black curtain to help keep your privacy. I think the reason the front walls are made of glass is to help with soundproofing. The music could really be loud especially during the night so the glass helps to keep the sound from outside be heard inside.
It comes with a hot and cold shower, air conditioning, and some toiletries. Room design was simple and yet cozy, like a typical hotel room but with accents of summer and the beach. We loved that the bed foam is soft and comfortable to sleep in. The concrete walls are not well-polished but it adds to the overall design of the room. The air conditioning could really be cold especially during the night. It has enough space to move in which is good for people with huge pieces of luggage.
Dorm Beds are also available. You can book a bed for as low as $8 to $10 a night. At that price, you could still enjoy the amenities of the hostel.
Food Talk: Mad Monkey Hostel Serves Big
Mad Monkey Hostels cover most food choices for all of the nationalities. There are good choices for breakfasts, lunch, and dinner, and most especially drinks (alcoholic or not). The price point is also good for the serving. The food will also be served fresh and hot as they will be made to order. Meal prices are ranging from only $3 to $5 with a big serving.
If you’re a vegan, they have that on the menu. If you’re looking for more meaty kind of meal, they have that too. If you’re a conscious one about your body, they have a meal appropriate for that. They even have a meal for the bodybuilders and protein shakes too.
Amenities and Activities at Mad Monkey Hostel Boracay
As mentioned above, Mad Monkey Hostel provides a luxurious experience at a backpacker’s price point of view.
Swimming Pool: A hostel with a huge swimming pool enough to cover pool parties. Nice, eh!
Roofdeck Spa: Mad Monkey also offers spa and massage to stay-in guests and outsiders.
Bar: A breakfast location during the day and a party area at night.
Tattoo Studio: Get your own tattoo at this hostel too.
Booze Cruise: A boat party for everyone who’d like to have fun. We hadn’t done this unfortunately because our schedule in Boracay was full of activities during the day but we would have loved to join on one.
WiFi: Enough speed to post your selfies and some videos.
Lounge Area: For people who’d like to chill, read a book, or chat with a friend. This place is perfect for you. Almost empty during the night as people are busy partying.
If there are activities I missed, please let me know in the comments.
Inputs and Recommendations for Future Travelers
Mad Monkey Hostel Boracay is great for single people or those who are keen to meet new people and always ready to mingle. If you’re the type of person to chit chat, party, and always looking forward to hanging out with people, the place is perfect for you!
If you are a soul-searching type of traveler and wants peace and serenity, don’t book in here unless you want to go partying and meeting new people to make friends.
Couples, on the other hand, could either enjoy or detest their stay at the hostel. It really depends on the type of couple you are. If you are a couple looking for a serene place to chill and relax, Mad Monkey Hostel could be a turn off for you. But if you are a couple game to anything like chatting random people and partying during the night, this will be the best choice!
If you’re traveling with a child, you might be better off staying at another hotel. Mad Monkey Hostel Boracay might not be that kid-friendly enough and the party atmosphere starts early afternoon which could make your child uncomfortable. The hostel and their atmosphere are most suitable for grown-ups looking for fun, party, and travelers looking forward to having a great time while in the hostel.
Will we stay again at Mad Monkeys? Definitely a yes! We’d like to try partying with other people the next time we stay as our energies have been drained during the day because of whole day activities. The staff in the hostel are awesome and friendly and could be your buddies when outside the facility.
